6 Kids Games for Learning Piano Music Suzy S. Is your child struggling to stay focused when theyre practicing the piano? Thats normalit just means it might be time to add something new to the routine! Get some great ideas for music games for kids in this guest post by Santa Cruz, CA teacher John S... Can your 4- to 6-year-old keep her focus through the entirety of a traditional piano practice? Music demands a tremendous amount of attention, in several different areas at once: reading music, being careful about pitch, rhythm, and fingering, and much more! Some children have no trouble keeping on task with all these endeavors. However, if your young child is like the vast majority, you may need to break up their practice with other activities. In between their private lessons, playing music games for kids can certainly helpand most of these you can play with your child even if you dont have much of a music background! 1. Be an animal Most young children love pretending to be different animals. Not only that, but the intuitive connection of musical features with an animals characteristics comes quickly and effortlessly to most kids. Try something like the following, perhaps while looking at a picture with lots of different animals: You: Ok, which animal would you like to be? Child: A snake! You: A snake, wow! What would snake music sound like? The child may immediately have a sense of snake music. If so, let em play! It may not fit your idea of snake music in any way, but if theyâre engaging with their imaginations, let them be. If a child isnt sure what to do, you might make a suggestion like the following: You: To me, a snake is a slithery thing. (Play a stepwise melody that moves up and down the piano in a sinuous fashion.) Do you think this sounds like a snake? What do you think would sound more like a snake? 2. Use a picture book Books for young children that have great pictures are a nice way to guide an improvisation that progresses through a beginning, middle, and end. Many children will respond immediately when you ask them to look at the picture and think about what it would sound like. If they get stuck, you can point out specific features in the pictures. For instance, âSee the twinkling stars? Can you make a twinkling sound like those stars might make?â or âThose are some big, hairy monsters! How can you make a big, hairy sound on the piano?â You can always play them a little example to get them started. Chances are, they will be impatient for you to stop so that they can get their hands on the piano keys. 3. Make up a story This is a great game for kids if you know how to play piano as well. Start off by thinking of a story, like the following: âA man was walking down the streetâ (play ambling, rhythmic music at an andante tempo) âwhen suddenly,â (stop playing) âhe saw an elephant right in front of him.â (pounding, ponderous bass line perhaps with circus-like qualities) âThe elephant was dressed in royal finery, and being ridden by a man in a suit of armor.â (fanfare, clanking sounds) Let your imagination run wild with bold, big images that you can translate into music. Next, you can ask them to contribute, either with story ideas, or by playing the piano. Gradually, you can encourage them to do the whole thing, story and music, by themselves. 4. Pick four pitch classes Restricting the available pitches is a great way to make improvisation sound better. It turns out that four is a perfect number, because all combinations of four pitches can sound musical. You: Letâs take turns choosing the pitches weâre going to use for this song. You can choose any letter A through G, and you can make it sharp or flat if you want. Child: A-flat! You: Good, so you can play any A-flat you want. (play all of the A-flats on the piano) You can be sure you have an A-flat when itâs the middle black key in a group of three. Then itâs your turn to choose a note, and alternate until four pitches are chosen. Even if it is a cluster, the group of pitches can sound good. Let your child play on those pitches in any rhythm they like. If they play a note thatâs not one of the four you selected, tell and show them exactly what note they played by mistake, and remind them of the notes that were chosen. 5. Repeat after me Rhythm This is another great game if you dont know much about the piano, because you can play it away from the piano, sitting cross-legged on the floor. Heres how I play with my students: âMe first, and then you,â I say, then start with simple rhythms, banging the floor or clapping while saying the counts aloud. I chant, âOne and Two and Three and Four and,â while alternating hands pounding the floor, L-R-L-R on the main beats. Look at your kid around beat four and more than likely they will get the right idea and repeat after you. Gradually increase the complexity of your rhythms so that they are fun and interesting, but not too hard. While using large movements and big muscles is the best way to get started in this game, it need not stay there. When they are comfortable with large movements, ask them to make gentle finger taps. Then, they can start playing specific piano keys; for example, you can play B-flat while the child plays E-flat. 6. Repeat after you Three pitches Sitting next to your child at the keyboard, ask him or her to play any three pitches, one after the other. Then play the same pitches, perhaps in a different register. You can spice it up by asking for different dynamics: âPlay me really soft ones now,â or âTry three loud ones.â Make sure that your child plays the notes separately and clearly so that you can accurately repeat them. Use your imagination! Of course, these games for kids are only the beginning. Taking your cue from your childâs natural creativity, you can develop a whole world of musical games. Weve all heard that children are like sponges and can pick up language very easily. While children do have an incredible capacity to rapidly assimilate information, itâs important to keep in mind the differences in learning languages that exist between children and adults, and how to best make use of language learning for children. The following are some things to keep in mind as you look into introducing your child to the Spanish language. Create the Right Environment Children can absorb information extremely quickly, but itâs important to create a conducive environment for this to happen. Children actually pick up on what the majority language being spoken is (in other words, the language they see the majority of the people around them speaking); sometimes, this can cause resistance in learning a minority language. You can help avoid this by creating lots of immersive environments for children: arrange play dates in which the majority language is Spanish, play music and watch cartoons in Spanish, and otherwise encourage Spanish to be a major language in daily life. You can also deal directly with any resistance by creating games; depending on the age of the child and whether you are also speaking the language, you can establish âSpanish-onlyâ times in which anyone who speaks in English or any other language has to put a dollar in a jar, for example. Making it into a playful competition or game can encourage your child to engage in the foreign language. Use Games and Play Another point to consider regarding how kids learn Spanish is that, while adults often learn best in a focused, one-on-one setting, children often learn best through games, play, and group activities. This means there can be less focus on seriousness and extremely focused goals. In the beginning of learning a language, exposure and play in the language are more important than trying to meet specific benchmarks. Children naturally pick up underlying grammar structures through listening and experimentation, so there is less need for explicit grammar exercises. Be creative, and make as much use of music, books, and any other materials you can find in exploring the Spanish language with your child. A typical recruiter goes through hundreds of resumes in a single day and skims through each one for only 15-20 seconds. So how does one stand out among his or her peers and surmount these overwhelming odds? Well, the answer is pretty simple. Create a stellar resume that catches the attention of the recruiter. In order to do this, your resume must be well optimized with clear subsections, a clean scannable format, well-optimized bullet points, lots of action words, quantification of achievements and much more. A lot of people tend to use the same conventional format, use the same action words and in fact, list the same set of hobbies that everyone else has added in their job resume. This usually backfires as thereâs limited differentiating factor and ultimately leads to rejection. Hence it is no wonder 98% of the applicants, donât even make the first cut. So, to start with, you can make your resume easily skimmable by implementing the 1-Page Rule. Its like dancing on ice.Now, youre not literally dancing on ice but the floor slippery so your legs are going in all directions so its like dancing on ice.You look out the window and the weather is really cold. For example, this morning when I woke up it was actually snowing and its the 14th of April and snowing. I said:Wow, I hate weather like this!Meaning cold, not so so warm, a little dark, overcast, particularly at a time of the year when youre expecting warmer weather. Ok. So when we use LIKE its as a preposition, its always followed by a noun so that s one way you will recognise it.Its like a castle.Like dancing on ice. Always followed by a noun. Okay.Hes like his father.He is like his grandfather. Difference between Like and As Don't keep this to yourself, tell the world: When we use AS we usually use it before the subject and a verb. So this is how you will recognise AS.For example:Please leave everything as it was.Please leave everything as it was.It is the subject. Was is the verb.Please do it as I showed you.So if youre helping somebody at work and theyre looking for some help and you help them for example with their spreadsheet youll say:Please do it as I have showed you.So I is the subject. Have showed is the verb.So immediately you can recognise when you use AS.When we want to use AS also as a preposition? What Is the Difference Between ADD and ADHD As an ADHD expert one of the questions that Im asked most often is, What is the difference between ADD and ADHD? Sometimes people share with me that they were diagnosed with ADD is as a kid and wonder how the ADHD that they hear about today is different from the diagnosis they received in childhood. With both terms being so prevalent, people are often surprised to learn that ADD is actually an outdated term. Today healthcare providers only refer to ADHD and no longer use ADD as a diagnostic label. Labels like ADD and ADHD originate from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM), which is the healthcare manual for all recognized mental disorders. The DSM is used by healthcare professionals as a reference guide for the symptoms, impairments, and diagnostic criteria associated with ADHD as well as other disorders, like depression and anxiety. In 1980, the term Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) was included in the DSM for the first time. Two types of ADD were described: ADD with hyperactivity and ADD without hyperactivity. Overtime, healthcare professions became concerned that the term ADD didnt place enough emphasis on hyperactive and impulsive symptoms that so many people with the disorder experience. So, in 1987 the name was changed to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and has stayed the same ever since. Today ADHD is described in the DSM-5 as having 3 possible presentations (or subtypes): Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: This presentation is assigned to children and adults who experience challenges that are solely related to inattention symptoms. These symptoms reflect difficulty sustaining attention, persisting at tasks or play activities, following through on instructions, giving close attention to details, organizing tasks and activities, and keeping track of belongings. Predominantly Hyperactive Impulsive Presentation: This presentation is assigned to children, and occasionally to adults, who experience challenges solely related to the hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. These symptoms reflect excessive movement, including difficulty remaining seated, often fidgeting, and constantly being on-the-go as if driven by a motor, as well as excessive talkativeness, and impulsive behavior such as blurting out answers, difficulty waiting, and frequently interrupting others. Combined Presentation: This presentation is assigned to children and adults who experience symptoms in both the inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive clusters. Its the most common presentation diagnosed in children and adolescents. Often, when someone has received a diagnosis of the Predominantly Inattentive Presentation of ADHD, they will refer to themselves as having ADD rather than ADHD. Its an easy way to describe the fact that they struggle with focus and concentration, but arent necessarily hyperactive or impulsive. It is much easier to day ADD than it is to say ADHD-Predominantly Inattentive Presentation whenever youre talking about your diagnosis! And these patients arent alone. There is discussion among many clinicians and researchers about whether the term ADHD should be changed to better reflect the symptoms and challenges that come with the disorder. For example, the majority of children and adults with ADHD struggle with organization, time management and following multi-step instructions. None of these challenges are clearly captured by the ADHD label. In addition, for children and adults who have the inattentive presentation of ADHD, it doesnt necessarily make sense to have the term hyperactivity included the diagnosis. Some psychologists have suggested that Executive Function Deficit Disorder may be a better term for ADHD, especially for the inattentive presentation. Over the next decade, as scientists learn more about ADHD and the biological underpinnings of the disorder, we can expect to see changes in the way healthcare professionals think about and label the disorder. With so many possible presentations and combinations of ADHD symptoms, clear descriptions and labels will make it easier for people with ADHD to communicate about their experiences and will create pathways for the development of more targeted and personalized treatments.
